It’s going to be an interesting season for Dabo Swinney’s Clemson Tigers in 2022, especially at the quarterback position. Last year, starter D.J. Uiagalelei was one of the worst performers at his position in the ACC, in addition to the PCL sprain and finger injuries he dealt with last season. Needless to say, it was a tough season. However, Swinney and company are confident in Uiagalelei in 2022. How confident? Just listen to the words of the Clemson coach, per 247 Sports.

“He’s out of the knee brace finally. Finger is healthy. He’s become elite from a nutrition and body composition standpoint. He’s done that at an unbelievable level. You look at him and you’re like, ‘Wow.’ He’s stronger, faster. Probably 30 pounds lighter. Mentally, he’s just a different person than he was last year because of what he went through. He lost his confidence and didn’t play as well as he needed to, but watching him go through that and never make an excuse, it fortified him as a leader. He’s as respected a guy as we have on this team.”

Said Uiagalelei worked hard this summer on technique and fundamentals.

“Now he’s just got to go do it.”

Dabo Swinney said that D.J. Uiagalelei is “finally out of the knee brace” and that his finger is feeling good as well. Above all, the Clemson signal-caller is going to enter the 2022 season more fit than he’s ever been, with the Tigers coach saying he’s “probably 30 pounds lighter.”

The differences go beyond Uiagalelei’s physical traits as well. Swinney says he sees a different quarterback mentally as well. Clemson offensive coordinator Brandon Streeter feels that the arrival of 2022 QB recruit Cade Klubnik has lit a fire under Uiagalelei.

Whatever the reason, Dabo Swinney and the Clemson Tigers will be back in the conversation as legitimate contenders for the National Championship if D.J. Uiagalelei can enjoy a bounce-back season.
