On August 2nd, Jordan Poyer injured his elbow at practice. He left the field in obvious pain and was quickly referred out for an MRI. It has since been reported that he sustained a “hyperextended elbow”. With the season opener five weeks away, Bills Mafia is on the edge of their seat wondering if Poyer will be ready for Week 1.

Luckily, the return to play in the NFL is quick for elbow injuries of this nature. A hyperextension is basically a very mild version of a dislocation. Dislocations themselves only carry on average a 3-4 week recovery time (1), so a hyperextension can usually return faster than that. Bills Mafia’s original nemesis, Adam Schefter, was able to report the good news later that night.

However, Bills Mafia already knew the Poyer prognosis if they were following @ThighDoctor.

Worst case scenario: elbow dislocation/subluxation, or a fracture. Best case scenario : mild-moderate sprain or bruise (contusion) Even in worst case should be OK week 1 even if surgery needed. Barring anything more complicated https://t.co/7wWj4SKKXQ

The elbow structures likely involved are the ligaments and capsule of Poyer’s elbow joint.

If you were wondering what a hyperextension injury might look like, this video is a textbook example.

The Buffalo Bills currently has the luxury of letting Jordan Poyer rest for just over a month before the opener. This should allow him to fully heal. I would expect to see him sit out the rest of camp and return to practice the week of the game. Don’t be surprised if he is still wearing a brace in September.
