For queer youths, being with family is probably one of the most worrying things we experience. In some cases, students are not at home, so being at home may harm their mental health. If this is the case for you, congratulations on having passed Thanksgiving. This is a psychological preparation for a (possibly painful) long winter vacation. If it is usually the time to pull out your hair and bite your tongue, we have compiled a non-exhaustive list of tips to help you spend your holiday.

Keep in touch with your queer friends. Many queer and transgender people may be related to the struggle of a critical family, even if you feel that your experience is completely unique. Ask your queer friend for advice. If nothing happens, you can also find someone to vent. He knows how your shoes feel. It may even help to schedule chat times based on your reaction to a particular party or situation, allowing yourself to be preemptive.

Weigh your options. Everyone's family life is at least a little different. If you find yourself in a situation that causes anxiety, consider ways to reduce this anxiety. Maybe it's calling a friend. Maybe it's a meaningful conversation with your family. If this is not possible, you might consider removing yourself from the environment altogether. You can choose to fight, so be sure to consider the effectiveness and value of each conversation.

Make time to take care of yourself. It is important to relieve stress in situations that may bring about negative emotions, so be sure to give yourself space and time. Read a book, enjoy a comfortable bath, or make an appointment for treatment. Just keep your needs in mind!

Don't deceive yourself. Being in a place where you can't be yourself can be an ineffective experience. Remember, you are a unique and beautiful person, and what people who don’t know the real you think of you should not harm your self-worth.

Having said that, enjoy the winter vacation! Find your safe space, get through those stressful situations, and stay true to yourself. Happy holidays, see you in spring!
